A CPUT student took to social media to seek more clarity on private accommodation rules on behalf of her roommate as she could face homelessness.

This comes after her roommate is said to have been issued an abrupt eviction notice following a third written warning. On a post written on the “CPUT Future and Current Students under EFFSC” Facebook page, Othembele Dabane, the concerned roommate said, “she’s given only 3 weeks to stay here after that she should leave”.

The first warning written on the 15th of October was issued following the tenant’s refusal to place back “items” after her cleaning, this resulted in the landlord persisting for the rectification of the issue on several occasions.

The second warning issued on October 16th reports the implication of the tenant’s intentional disrespect towards the landlord after the tenant did not place food items in sealed containers despite being notified to do so. The warning also claimed the tenant was not apologetic of her actions as she went on to scream at the landlord via “text”.

The third warning claims disrespect of the tenant towards the landlord after the tenant’s defied the landlord's rule on closing the toilet when using it.

according to the post, the roommate was issued all three warnings on the 19th of October 2023. Dabane expresses concerns over the eviction as it comes while the exam season is approaching.

Debane was also served her second warning on the 9th of September after an altercation for not greeting the landlord on several occasions.

Fellow students urged the roommates to take the matter to the institution’s housing department, Dabane commented that such route had been taken, but the department’s advice was for them to tolerate the situation as the academic year is ending soon.
