Atule Joka takes on a new role upon his departure from the SABC.

Former SABC journalist announces his appointment as the MEC’s Spokesperson for the department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.


Joka expresses his excitement on looking forward for filling the role under Eastern Cape’s MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe with their shared vision in advancing the province through the department.

I am happy to be working with MEC Kontsiwe… who is very passionate about emancipation of our young people. Over the last month I have spent engaging with her I have come to realize her vision of wanting to take the province to the next level”, he said.


The born-and-bred Cradock journalist considers the opportunity as a service to his home province as he plans to enrich it, “I’m looking forward to provide support… to the MEC and contribute to the development of Sport on the province”, Joka mentioned.

adding “mine is to inject vigor, energy and enthusiasm in the sector” while further stating the department’s endorsement on the promotion and preservation of traditional customs with their heritage and that of their protection in the province.


Joka put more emphasis on the significance of the department in highlighting its life-long values on him and that of his peers while crediting the man behind those lessons, saying “we never became professional soccer players but having a ball and playing kit saved us from a lot of things. I played under the guidance of a guy called Ta Luja, on weekend he would host us on camps and he used that opportunity to instill moral values in us that we still live by up until this day”.


In his new journey, the newly appointed Spokesperson calls on everyone in the Eastern Cape on a pledge of eradicating the social ills that confronts the province.


while looking back on his journey at the Company, on the Facebook post Joka announced his departure from the South African Broadcasting Corporation on September 23, calling to his followers to tune in for his last bulletin on the 7pm IsiXhosa News.
